Source water: Groundwater, drawn from the aquifer beneath Long Island. There is no reservoir and no river here: everything that reaches the ground eventually reaches the water people drink, which is why land use above the aquifer matters so much more on Long Island than it does upstate. This is the most advanced treatment of any system in our service area, and it exists because of a contaminant most people have never heard of. The authority runs 19 advanced oxidation process systems, more than any other water provider in New York State. Each injects hydrogen peroxide, passes the water through an ultraviolet reactor that breaks the target molecule apart, then polishes it through two vessels holding 20,000 pounds of activated carbon. Where advanced oxidation is not yet installed, affected wells are treated by other means, taken out of service, or blended so that what enters distribution stays below the limit.

Buildings and plumbing in Brookhaven

Suffolk County Water Authority is the rare case in this region that reports the job finished. The authority states it has eliminated lead pipes from its system and completed its service line replacement programme ahead of the federal deadlines, at no cost to customers. It credits geographic information system tooling for letting it keep the inventory accurate and update it continuously rather than in periodic sweeps. For a household that means the lead question here is largely about your own internal plumbing rather than the line in the street: anything plumbed before 1986 may still contain lead solder, and brass fittings and older fixtures can contribute regardless of what the service line is made of. The authority is an independent public benefit corporation serving roughly 1.2 million residents, which makes it one of the largest groundwater suppliers in the country.

PFAS in Brookhaven

Two separate contaminants drive treatment here and they behave very differently, which matters enormously if you are choosing a home filter. PFAS is handled well by activated carbon. 1,4-dioxane is not: carbon filters have little to no effect on it, which is precisely why the authority had to build ultraviolet and peroxide systems at roughly 2.5 million dollars each rather than carbon vessels at around 1 million. The authority volunteered to start testing for it in 2003, piloted treatment in 2011, and built the state's first full-scale advanced oxidation system in 2018, two years before New York's limit took effect. Since 2019 it has been awarded 78 million dollars through the Water Infrastructure Improvement Act for this work.

What these figures mean for filter choice

Lead is a plumbing question rather than a supply question in Brookhaven, as it is everywhere.
