Water filters for single-family homes on city water
The most flexible case. You control the main line, so both point-of-entry and point-of-use options are open, and the choice comes down to what the water actually needs.
The case with the most options
In a house you own with a municipal supply, nothing is off the table. You control the main line, so point-of-entry and point-of-use equipment are both available, and the decision comes down entirely to what the water needs rather than what the building permits.
That freedom is also how people overspend. Having the option to treat the whole house does not mean the whole house needs treating, and a great deal of residential equipment is sold on the assumption that more coverage is automatically better.
The useful framing is to separate the two questions. What is the problem, and where does it need solving? Chlorine taste in drinking water is a one-tap problem. Scale in a water heater is a whole-building problem. They need different equipment and only one of them is expensive.
Where the constraints actually appear
Space at the point of entry is the usual limit, and the shortage is normally clearance rather than floor area. A filter housing needs room to swing a wrench, and a tank needs height above it for the control valve. A unit that physically fits but cannot be serviced is a problem you meet six months later.
Drain access decides whether backwashing equipment is possible. Softeners, iron filters, and neutralisers all discharge, and a run to an appropriate point with the correct air gap is part of the job rather than an afterthought.
Power matters for anything with a control valve or a lamp. An outlet shared with a circuit that trips regularly is not suitable for a UV system, because the failure mode is silent.
Being on public water changes what you should worry about
A regulated public supply is monitored against federal and state limits, and the results are published annually. That covers the water up to the property line and it is a genuinely strong system.
What it does not cover is your own service line and internal plumbing, which is where lead enters if it enters at all. So on city water the useful questions are narrow: is the service line lead or unknown, was the house plumbed before 1986, and does anything about the taste or appearance bother you.

The constraints that decide what is possible
These are checked before any equipment is discussed, because in this kind of property they rule options in and out before water quality does.

Equipment that suits this setting
- Whole-house filtration. A filter plumbed into the main line where water enters the building, so every tap, shower, and appliance downstream is fed treated water.
- Water softeners. An ion exchange system that swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, which is the only method that actually removes hardness minerals from the water.
- Reverse osmosis, tank. A membrane system under the sink that produces treated water to a dedicated tap and stores it in a small pressure tank.
- Under-sink carbon filters. A carbon block cartridge on the cold line under the sink. No permanent alteration required in the right configuration.
What this equipment will not do
- Hardness. A carbon filter does not soften water and will not stop scale.
- Dissolved solids, nitrates, and most salts. Those need reverse osmosis.
- Bacteria and viruses, unless a UV stage is added.
Problems that come up in these properties
- Hard water. Confirm with hardness test strip or titration kit, in grains per gallon.
- Chlorine and chloramine taste. Confirm with free and total chlorine test strip, plus the utility report for the disinfectant type.
- Lead in drinking water. Confirm with certified laboratory analysis of a first-draw tap sample.
- PFAS. Confirm with certified laboratory analysis using an epa-approved pfas method.

- Whole-house filter installation. Typically 3 to 5 hours.
- Under-sink reverse osmosis installation. Typically 2 to 4 hours.
