Water softener or salt-free conditioner
One removes hardness. The other does not, and is sold as though it does. Here is the actual difference.
The difference in one paragraph
A softener removes calcium and magnesium from the water by exchanging them for sodium on a resin bed. The minerals leave. Test the water afterwards and the hardness reading drops.
A salt-free conditioner leaves the minerals in the water and changes their form so they are less inclined to stick to surfaces as scale. Nothing is removed. Test the water afterwards and the hardness reading is unchanged.
That single distinction drives everything else, and it is the thing most product marketing in this category works hardest to blur.
What you will notice with each
With a softener: soap lathers readily, laundry comes out softer, spotting on glassware stops, scale stops forming, and the water feels slightly slippery because there are no hardness minerals left to react with soap. Some people dislike that feel, which is worth knowing in advance.
With a conditioner: less scale in the water heater and the kettle over time. Soap still behaves as it did. Glassware still spots. The water does not feel any different.
If someone promises you soft-feeling water from a salt-free unit, they are describing something the technology does not do.
Certification tells you which is which
NSF/ANSI 44 is the standard for cation exchange water softeners, and it covers hardness reduction. A genuine softener can be certified to it.
There is no equivalent NSF/ANSI hardness reduction certification for salt-free conditioners, because they do not reduce hardness. Where these products carry a certification mark it is normally for material safety, meaning the unit does not add anything harmful to the water. That is a worthwhile thing to verify and it is a completely different claim.
So if a salesperson shows you a certification, read what it covers rather than that it exists.
When each one is right
Choose a softener when hardness is genuinely high, when scale is shortening the life of appliances, and when you have a drain, an outlet, and no local restriction on brine discharge.
Choose a conditioner when a softener is not possible. No drain within reach, no outlet, or a municipality that restricts brine to the sanitary sewer. It also suits households that want scale control without adding sodium or carrying salt.
Choose neither when hardness is mild and the only complaint is spotted glassware. A rinse aid and a dishwasher setting is the proportionate response, and it costs a few dollars a year.
Running costs and maintenance
A softener needs salt, typically one to two 40 pound bags a month, and regenerates on a cycle that uses water. Resin lasts ten to fifteen years. The most common failure is salt bridging, where a crust forms across the brine tank with a void underneath, so the unit draws brine from nothing while the tank looks full.
A conditioner needs no salt, no drain, and no power. Media typically lasts three to six years and is replaced rather than topped up.
Over ten years the conditioner is usually cheaper to run and the softener usually delivers more. Which of those matters more depends on how hard your water actually is, which is why we measure before recommending.
Common questions
Is softened water bad for you?
For most people it makes no meaningful difference. Ion exchange adds sodium in proportion to the hardness removed, and on typical water the amount is small next to dietary intake. If you are on a medically restricted sodium intake, discuss it with a clinician, and consider potassium chloride instead, which works the same way and costs more to run.
Can I drink water from a salt-free conditioner?
Yes. It does not add anything to the water and it does not remove anything either, so the drinking water is essentially as it was. Neither a conditioner nor a softener addresses health contaminants such as lead, nitrates, or PFAS, so if that is the concern it needs separate point-of-use treatment.
Will a conditioner reverse existing scale?
Some manufacturers claim it gradually removes existing deposits. Treat that cautiously and buy on the basis of preventing new scale rather than reversing old. Heavy scale in a water heater is better addressed by descaling or by accepting the appliance is near the end of its life.
