Lead is why these calls happen

Nearly every enquiry from a childcare setting is about lead, and that is the right thing to be worried about. Young children absorb lead more readily than adults and the effects are on neurological development, which is why this population appears specifically in almost every regulation on the subject.

Several states now require lead testing at licensed childcare facilities, and the requirements differ between the four states we cover. Check your own state licensing rules before specifying anything, because they may dictate both the testing schedule and the standard any filter has to meet.

The reassuring part is that lead almost never comes from the supply. It is picked up from the service line and from the plumbing and fixtures inside the building, which means it is a local problem with a local and usually affordable fix.

Every tap used for drinking or food

The scope in a childcare setting is wider than in a home and narrower than a whole building. It covers every tap used for drinking, for filling bottles or cups, and for preparing food or formula, and it excludes everything else.

That list is usually longer than people expect once they walk it. A kitchen tap, a staff room tap, a bottle filler and two classroom sinks used for cups is five points, not one.

Fixtures are the common surprise. A building constructed after the 1986 ban on lead solder can still have brass fixtures that predate the 2011 tightening of the lead free definition, and those are a lead source in an otherwise modern building. They are also cheap to replace, which often makes them the first thing to fix.

Certification and paperwork

The filter needs to be certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead specifically. A product certified under standard 42 has been tested for taste and odour and not for lead, and in this setting that distinction is the whole point.

Keep the certification documentation with your compliance records along with the installation date and the replacement schedule. Inspectors ask for it, and a filter nobody can evidence is a filter that will need re-proving under time pressure.

Flushing protocol is worth writing down alongside it. Lead concentrations are highest in water that has stood overnight or over a weekend, which in a childcare setting is precisely when the building is opened and the first cups are filled.

Maintenance nobody forgets

This is the setting where a missed filter change matters most and where staff turnover makes it most likely. A cartridge past its capacity stops adsorbing, and on lead there is no taste or appearance cue that anything has changed.

Put the interval on the same schedule as the fire alarm test and the first aid check rather than treating it as a facilities extra. Institutions are good at recurring compliance tasks and poor at one-off maintenance items.

Mark the date on the cartridge at every change. It is the simplest control there is, and it survives a change of manager in a way that a spreadsheet often does not.

The constraints that decide what is possible

  • Treatment needs to cover every tap used for drinking or food preparation, not one
  • Fixtures are often old even where the building is not
  • Documentation of the filter and its certification is usually required
