Water filters for new construction
The cheapest point to plan treatment, because the space, drain, and power can be designed in rather than retrofitted. Often it also shows that less equipment is needed than expected.
The cheapest moment to plan this
Everything that makes a retrofit expensive is nearly free before the walls close. Space at the point of entry, a floor drain within reach, an outlet on a suitable circuit, and a loop in the pipework ready to receive equipment later all cost very little to include and a great deal to add afterwards.
Even if no treatment is going in on day one, a rough-in is worth discussing. A capped loop and a nearby drain means a future softener is a morning's work rather than a project.
The decisions that are hard to reverse are the ones about routing. Once the main run is buried in a slab or closed into a wall, where the equipment can go is settled.
Test rather than assume, in both directions
New construction has no lead plumbing, no lead solder, and no lead service line, which removes the single most common reason for residential filtration in this region. A lead filter in a new build usually solves a problem that does not exist.
That does not mean the water needs nothing. Hardness is a property of the supply rather than the building, so a new house on hard water will scale its brand new water heater exactly as an old one would. On a new well, everything is unknown until it is tested.
So the recommendation is the same as everywhere else and the answer is often different: test, then decide. Neighbouring properties give a useful indication on a municipal supply and very little indication on a well.
Coordinating with the builder
The useful conversation happens with the plumbing contractor before first fix, and it is short. Where does the main enter, is there a drain within reach, can an outlet be added there, and can a loop be left in the run.
Where treatment is going in as part of the build, sequencing matters. Equipment installed before the property is finished can be damaged or contaminated by construction debris in the lines, so commissioning is usually held back until the system has been flushed properly.
Get the as-built details in writing, including pipe materials and the route of the main. On a building you did not watch being constructed, that information is genuinely hard to recover later.
The constraints that decide what is possible
These are checked before any equipment is discussed, because in this kind of property they rule options in and out before water quality does.

Permission and approval
New construction has no lead plumbing, so lead filtration is usually unnecessary. Test rather than assume.
Equipment that suits this setting
- Whole-house filtration. A filter plumbed into the main line where water enters the building, so every tap, shower, and appliance downstream is fed treated water.
- Water softeners. An ion exchange system that swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, which is the only method that actually removes hardness minerals from the water.
- Reverse osmosis, tank. A membrane system under the sink that produces treated water to a dedicated tap and stores it in a small pressure tank.
What this equipment will not do
- Hardness. A carbon filter does not soften water and will not stop scale.
- Dissolved solids, nitrates, and most salts. Those need reverse osmosis.
- Bacteria and viruses, unless a UV stage is added.
Problems that come up in these properties
- Hard water. Confirm with hardness test strip or titration kit, in grains per gallon.
- Chlorine and chloramine taste. Confirm with free and total chlorine test strip, plus the utility report for the disinfectant type.
- Lead in drinking water. Confirm with certified laboratory analysis of a first-draw tap sample.
- PFAS. Confirm with certified laboratory analysis using an epa-approved pfas method.

- Whole-house filter installation. Typically 3 to 5 hours.
- Under-sink reverse osmosis installation. Typically 2 to 4 hours.
