A softener and reverse osmosis solve different problems

They are not competing products and buying one instead of the other is usually a mistake. One treats the whole building for scale. The other treats one tap for what you drink.

They are not alternatives

This is the most common confusion we are asked to settle, and it comes from the two being sold side by side as though you pick one. They do different jobs in different places.

A softener is point-of-entry equipment. It sits on the main line, treats every drop entering the building, and removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. What it is for is scale: the deposit that shortens the life of a water heater, furs a kettle, and leaves spots on glassware.

Reverse osmosis is point-of-use equipment. It sits under one sink, treats the water from one tap, and pushes water through a membrane fine enough to hold back dissolved contaminants. What it is for is what you drink and cook with.

A household with hard water and a lead service line needs both, and neither substitutes for the other. A softener does nothing about lead. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink does nothing for the water heater in the basement.

What each one actually removes

A softener certified to NSF/ANSI 44 is tested for hardness reduction and for barium and radium. That is the list. It is not a filter in the sense most people mean, and it will not improve taste, remove chlorine, or reduce lead.

Reverse osmosis certified to NSF/ANSI 58 is tested against a much broader list, typically including lead, arsenic, nitrate, fluoride and total dissolved solids. Systems additionally certified under protocol P473 are tested for PFOA and PFOS specifically.

The certification number is what makes these claims comparable. A product sold as removing 99 per cent of contaminants without naming a standard has told you nothing at all, because the manufacturer chose both the contaminant and the test.

How to tell which one your water calls for

Start with a hardness figure. Under about 3 grains per gallon the water is soft and a softener has nothing useful to do. Between 3 and 7 it is a judgement call, worth it if you are seeing scale on heating elements and not worth it if the only complaint is spotting on glassware, which a rinse aid fixes for a few dollars a year. Above 7 the arithmetic usually favours softening over the life of a water heater.

Then look at what you are drinking. If your utility reports a lead service line at your address, or the record says unknown, that is a point-of-use question and a softener is irrelevant to it. The same applies to PFAS, nitrate and arsenic.

Your utility publishes hardness in its annual report and the lead position in its service line inventory, so both answers are free before anyone quotes you for anything.

The cases for buying neither

Soft municipal water with a copper service line and no detected contaminants of concern is common across the upland reservoir supplies in this region, and in that situation the honest recommendation is a carbon cartridge for taste, or nothing.

If the complaint is a chlorine taste, that is the cheapest problem in this field. Activated carbon at the tap deals with free chlorine at ordinary flow, and a jug filter left in the fridge deals with it for the cost of a takeaway.

If the water is soft and you have been quoted for a softener anyway, ask which figure the quote is based on. On a supply under 3 grains per gallon a softener will consume salt for years to achieve an effect you will not notice.

If you do fit both, fit them in the right order

The softener goes first, on the main line. Reverse osmosis goes after it, under the sink it serves. Softened water is easier on an RO membrane because scale is what shortens membrane life, so the pairing extends the life of the more expensive consumable.

One wrinkle worth knowing: softened water carries sodium in place of the calcium and magnesium removed, in proportion to how hard the water was. On very hard water that matters to anyone on a sodium-restricted diet, and reverse osmosis at the drinking tap removes it again. Potassium chloride is the alternative regenerant if you would rather avoid the sodium at source.

The other ordering mistake is plumbing the outside taps through the softener. There is no reason to soften water for a garden, and doing it wastes salt and capacity.

Common questions

Can reverse osmosis replace a water softener?

Not for scale. An RO system treats one tap, so the water reaching your water heater, dishwasher and shower is untouched by it, and those are where scale actually costs money. It is a reasonable substitute only if your single concern is the taste and quality of drinking water and you do not mind hard water everywhere else.

Will a water softener remove lead?

No. Softeners are certified under NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness, barium and radium, and lead is not on that list. Lead is picked up from the service line and the plumbing after the point where a softener sits, so a softener is both untested for it and in the wrong place. Use a point-of-use filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead.

Is salt-free conditioning the same as softening?

No, and the distinction matters. A salt-free conditioner changes how scale forms so it is less likely to stick to surfaces. It does not remove calcium and magnesium, so the water still tests hard and still feels hard. It is a reasonable choice where there is no drain for a softener or where brine discharge is restricted, and a poor choice if you want the water to actually be soft.
