Written to be useful if you never contact us. Cost ranges with their assumptions stated, comparisons that name the trade-offs, and the cases where the answer is to spend nothing.
Work out what you have first
Almost every expensive mistake in this field comes from choosing equipment before confirming the problem. These three cover the groundwork: reading what your utility already publishes, understanding how a private well differs, and knowing roughly what things cost before anyone quotes you.
- What water filter installation actually costs. Planning ranges for each equipment type, the assumptions behind them, and the conditions that move a quote up.
- How to read your water quality report. Where to find your utility's annual report, which rows actually matter, and what the numbers do and do not tell you about your own tap.
- City water and well water are different problems. One is monitored, regulated, and reported. The other is entirely your responsibility. That changes where treatment starts.
Comparisons
Each of these pairs gets presented as a simple better-or-worse choice and none of them is. They solve different problems, and the useful question is which problem you actually have.
- Reverse osmosis or whole-house filtration. These solve different problems. One treats a tap thoroughly, the other treats a building lightly, and picking by price gets it wrong.
- Water softener or salt-free conditioner. One removes hardness. The other does not, and is sold as though it does. Here is the actual difference.
- Buying a filter online or hiring an installer. Where online purchases go wrong, which jobs are genuinely do-it-yourself, and what an installer is actually for.
Specific situations

How these are written
Every cost range states its assumptions inline, because a number without them is close to useless. Every factual claim about water quality or regulation names its source and year. Where a standard is cited, the specific NSF/ANSI number appears rather than a general reference to certification.
Each guide also says where the answer is to do nothing. Boiling makes nitrate and PFAS worse rather than better. Cloudy water that clears from the bottom upward is air and needs no equipment. A sulfur smell on hot water only is usually the water heater rather than the supply. Those are the most useful things on the page when they apply to you.
What these guides deliberately leave out
There are no statistics about household water quality without a named source and year. The figures that circulate in this industry are often unattributable, frequently repeated from marketing material rather than from monitoring data, and occasionally invented outright. If we cannot point at who published something and when, it does not appear here.
There are no percentages of contaminants removed without a certification behind them. Reduction figures come from testing against a specific NSF/ANSI standard for a specific model, and quoting one without naming both is how buyers end up with a filter that was never tested for the thing they bought it for.
There is no urgency framing. Water quality problems are worth addressing properly rather than quickly, and in several cases the right first step costs nothing and takes two minutes at your own sink. Guides written to make you act today tend not to mention those.
