Work out what you have first

Almost every expensive mistake in this field comes from choosing equipment before confirming the problem. These three cover the groundwork: reading what your utility already publishes, understanding how a private well differs, and knowing roughly what things cost before anyone quotes you.

Comparisons

Each of these pairs gets presented as a simple better-or-worse choice and none of them is. They solve different problems, and the useful question is which problem you actually have.

How these are written

Every cost range states its assumptions inline, because a number without them is close to useless. Every factual claim about water quality or regulation names its source and year. Where a standard is cited, the specific NSF/ANSI number appears rather than a general reference to certification.

Each guide also says where the answer is to do nothing. Boiling makes nitrate and PFAS worse rather than better. Cloudy water that clears from the bottom upward is air and needs no equipment. A sulfur smell on hot water only is usually the water heater rather than the supply. Those are the most useful things on the page when they apply to you.

What these guides deliberately leave out

There are no statistics about household water quality without a named source and year. The figures that circulate in this industry are often unattributable, frequently repeated from marketing material rather than from monitoring data, and occasionally invented outright. If we cannot point at who published something and when, it does not appear here.

There are no percentages of contaminants removed without a certification behind them. Reduction figures come from testing against a specific NSF/ANSI standard for a specific model, and quoting one without naming both is how buyers end up with a filter that was never tested for the thing they bought it for.

There is no urgency framing. Water quality problems are worth addressing properly rather than quickly, and in several cases the right first step costs nothing and takes two minutes at your own sink. Guides written to make you act today tend not to mention those.
