Maintenance and filter replacement

Scheduled cartridge and media replacement at the interval the equipment is rated for, with the dates recorded so the schedule survives a change of occupant.

Why the interval is in gallons, not months

Cartridges are rated by volume. A household of five reaches a rated capacity in a fraction of the time a single occupant does, so a blanket twelve month interval either wastes cartridges or runs them well past exhaustion.

We set the interval from your actual usage at handover and write the date on the housing. That way the schedule survives a change of occupant, which is the point at which most maintenance records are lost.

For equipment where exhaustion is invisible, notably PFAS media and lead filters, we schedule conservatively. Breakthrough on those gives no taste or smell warning, so the calendar is the only control.

What running past the date actually does

A saturated carbon block stops adsorbing, and in some conditions can release previously captured compounds back into the water. That is a worse position than having no filter at all, because you are drinking on the assumption of protection that is no longer there.

A clogged sediment cartridge drops pressure across the whole property, which people often misread as a mains problem.

A UV lamp past its service life still emits visible light while its output has fallen below the dose the certification assumed. It looks like it is working and it is not.

You do not need us to do this

Most under-sink cartridges are a ten minute job and we will show you how, including which part numbers to buy and where to buy them from. If you would rather handle it yourself, that is a reasonable choice and we will support it.

A plan makes sense when the equipment is more involved, when the site has to document its maintenance, or when nobody has clear ownership of the task. Commercial sites and schools fall into that category almost every time.

Where we do hold the plan, we log each visit with what was changed and the readings taken, so there is a record rather than an assumption.

What we need in place

These are checked at the survey rather than discovered on the day. Where something is missing it changes the scope, and we would rather price that honestly up front.

Equipment this covers

  • Whole-house filtration. A filter plumbed into the main line where water enters the building, so every tap, shower, and appliance downstream is fed treated water.
  • Reverse osmosis, tank. A membrane system under the sink that produces treated water to a dedicated tap and stores it in a small pressure tank.
  • Under-sink carbon filters. A carbon block cartridge on the cold line under the sink.
  • Ultraviolet disinfection. A lamp that inactivates bacteria, viruses, and protozoa as water passes through.

Common questions

Do I have to take a plan to keep the warranty?

Not with us. Our workmanship warranty depends on the equipment being maintained at the manufacturer's intervals, not on who does it. If you change your own cartridges on schedule, that satisfies it. Some equipment manufacturers do attach conditions to their own warranties, and where that applies we tell you at handover so you can decide with the facts.

Can I change the cartridges myself?

For most under-sink and inline filters, yes, and it takes about ten minutes. We leave the part numbers so you can buy from whoever you like. Backwashing tanks, softener control valves, and ultraviolet systems are more involved, and a UV lamp in particular has a quartz sleeve that is easy to crack. Those are the ones people more often hand over.

What happens if I miss a replacement?

It depends what the filter is doing. A late sediment cartridge costs you pressure. A late carbon block stops adsorbing and can release captured compounds back into the water, which is worse than having no filter. A late PFAS or lead cartridge is the serious case, because breakthrough gives no taste or smell warning at all. Those we schedule conservatively for exactly that reason.

Where we work

We cover New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York. Because water quality is a local fact, our service area pages carry the utility, source water, treatment method, and reported contaminants for each town, with the report they came from and the year it covers.
