System relocation
Removal of a system from one property and reinstallation at another, including a check that the equipment still suits the water at the new address.
Take it with you
Water treatment equipment is portable more often than people assume. A reverse osmosis system, a softener, and most point-of-use filtration can be removed, transported, and refitted at a new address, and doing so is usually a fraction of the cost of buying again.
We disconnect, drain, and cap the plumbing at the property you are leaving so it is left in a sound and sellable condition. Where a dedicated tap was fitted, we can blank the hole or leave the tap in place depending on what has been agreed with the buyer.
At the new property we survey before refitting, because the install conditions are rarely identical and the old configuration may not transfer directly.
Test the new water first
This is the step people skip and it is the one that decides whether the move makes sense. Equipment is sized for the water it was specified against. A softener set for eighteen grains of hardness is the wrong setting for six, and a treatment train designed for iron and low pH may be entirely unnecessary at the new address.
Occasionally the honest advice is not to move the equipment. If you are leaving a well for a municipal supply, a full well treatment train has little to do at the new property and it is worth more sold with the house.
We test at the new address as part of the relocation, and we will tell you if the sensible outcome is to leave something behind.
What usually needs replacing in the move
Cartridges and membranes. Anything part way through its life is better replaced than transported, because moving a system is the natural point to reset the maintenance clock and because a membrane that has been allowed to dry out does not recover.
Flexible connectors and compression olives, which are cheap and are not worth reusing on a system you want to be leak free in someone else's kitchen.
Resin in a softener that is more than about ten years old, where the move is a reasonable moment to replace a component that is approaching the end of its life anyway.

These are checked at the survey rather than discovered on the day. Where something is missing it changes the scope, and we would rather price that honestly up front.

Equipment this covers
- Reverse osmosis, tank. A membrane system under the sink that produces treated water to a dedicated tap and stores it in a small pressure tank.
- Reverse osmosis, tankless. A pumped membrane system that produces water on demand rather than storing it, so it takes far less cabinet space and can sit on a counter.
- Water softeners. An ion exchange system that swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, which is the only method that actually removes hardness minerals from the water.

Common questions
Is it worth moving a system rather than buying new?
Usually, if the equipment has life left and the water at the new address is broadly similar. Removal and refitting is typically a fraction of replacement cost. The case where it is not worth it is a change in water source, and the clearest example is leaving a private well for a municipal supply, where a full well treatment train has almost nothing to do at the new property.
Will the same settings work at the new house?
Not reliably. Equipment is configured for the water it was specified against, so a softener set for eighteen grains of hardness is wrong at six. We test at the new address as part of the relocation and reconfigure, and occasionally that test is what tells us a piece of equipment is no longer needed at all.
What is left behind at the old property?
We cap and make good the plumbing so the property is sound and sellable. Where a dedicated tap was fitted we can blank the hole or leave the tap in place, depending on what you have agreed with the buyer. It is worth settling that in the sale rather than on moving day, because a blanking plate and a working tap send different signals to a purchaser.
