Hard water
Dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from limestone and other rock. Hard water is not a health problem. It is an equipment and laundry problem, and that is the honest basis for deciding whether to treat it.

Where hardness comes from
Rain is naturally soft. It picks up hardness on the way to your tap, dissolving calcium and magnesium out of limestone, chalk, and dolomite as it moves through the ground. That is why hardness maps so closely onto local geology, and why two towns a short drive apart can have very different figures.
Hardness is measured in grains per gallon or in milligrams per litre. Below about 3 grains is soft, 3 to 7 is moderately hard, and above 7 is generally treated as hard. Above about 10 grains most households start noticing it without being told to look.
Your utility publishes hardness in its annual report. That figure is a system average and your own tap can differ from it, particularly in a large distribution network fed from more than one source.
What it actually costs you
The expensive part is the water heater. Scale forms fastest where water is hottest, insulating the heating surface so the unit works harder for the same output. Efficiency falls gradually and the appliance fails earlier than it should.
After that it is a series of small annoyances that add up. Soap and detergent work less well because hardness minerals react with them, so you use more. Shower heads and aerators block. Kettles fur. Glassware comes out of the dishwasher with a film that no amount of rinsing shifts.
None of this is a health problem. Hard water is not harmful to drink, and the calcium and magnesium in it are dietary minerals. This matters because it changes the decision from a safety question into an economic one, and economic questions have a point below which the answer is to do nothing.
Deciding whether to treat it
Measure first. A hardness strip costs very little and gives you a number in under a minute, and we bring one to every water test anyway.
If the reading is high and you are replacing water heaters or seeing heavy scale, softening pays for itself over the life of the equipment. If the reading is moderate and your only complaint is spotted glasses, a rinse aid and a dishwasher setting will fix that for a few dollars a year.
Between those two positions sits the salt-free conditioner, which reduces scale without removing hardness, and which suits properties where a drain or brine discharge is not available. Understand what it does before buying one, because it will not make the water feel or test any softer.
How to confirm it
A hardness test strip gives a usable number in minutes. Your utility also publishes hardness in its annual report, though the figure is a system average and your tap may differ. Anything above about 7 grains per gallon is generally considered hard.

When not to treat it
If hardness is mild and your only complaint is spotting on glasses, a rinse aid and a dishwasher setting will fix that for a few dollars. Softening a whole house to solve a glassware problem is not a good trade. There is also no health reason to soften water, and the calcium and magnesium you remove are dietary minerals.
Treatment options that actually apply
These are the equipment types that address this problem. Each page states what the equipment does not do, so you can rule it out quickly if your situation does not match.
- Water softeners. An ion exchange system that swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, which is the only method that actually removes hardness minerals from the water.
- Salt-free conditioners. Template assisted crystallisation changes how hardness minerals behave so they are less likely to stick as scale.
What none of these will do
- Chlorine taste and odour. Add carbon for that.
- Lead, PFAS, nitrates, or bacteria.
- Iron above the level the resin can handle, which fouls the bed instead.
