What these units do and do not do

A salt-free conditioner uses template assisted crystallisation. Water passes over a media that encourages dissolved calcium and magnesium to form microscopic crystals. Those crystals are far less inclined to bond to a pipe wall or a heating element, so less scale forms.

The critical point, and the one most sales copy skips, is that the minerals are still in the water at the same concentration. Nothing has been removed. Test the water afterwards and the hardness reading will be unchanged.

That is not a defect. It is how the technology works. It becomes a problem only when a customer was led to expect soft water and gets conditioned hard water instead.

What you will and will not notice

You may notice less scale building in a kettle and in the water heater over time. That is the benefit these units are built for, and for some households it is enough.

You will still see spotting on glassware. Soap will still lather poorly. The water will not feel slippery the way softened water does. Laundry will feel much the same as before.

There is no NSF/ANSI certification for hardness reduction on these units, because they do not reduce hardness. If a seller shows you a certification mark, read what it actually covers. It is usually for material safety, meaning the unit does not add anything harmful, which is a different claim.

When a conditioner is the right call

The clearest case is a property where a softener is not possible. No drain within reach, no outlet, or a local restriction on brine discharge. A conditioner needs none of those and still reduces scale.

It also suits people who want scale control without adding sodium and without buying and carrying salt every month.

If you want water that feels soft, stops spotting glasses, and tests lower for hardness, this is not the product. A softener is.

What it reduces, and under which standard

This category carries no NSF/ANSI reduction certification, because it does not reduce the contaminant people most often associate with it. That is covered in detail above, and it is the single most important thing to understand before buying one.

What it does not do

Every filter has a boundary. These are the things this one will not fix, listed so you can rule it out quickly if your problem is on the list.

  • Hardness itself. The calcium and magnesium remain in the water at the same concentration.
  • Spotting on glassware and the feel of hard water, both of which usually persist.
  • Chlorine, lead, PFAS, or any health contaminant.
  • There is no NSF/ANSI reduction certification for hardness on these units, because they do not reduce hardness. Treat any claim of certified softening as a warning sign.

When it fits

  • You want less scale in a water heater but cannot install a drain or discharge brine
  • Salt discharge is restricted where you live
  • You accept that the water will still feel and test as hard

When it does not fit

  • You want water that feels soft or stops spotting glassware
  • You expect a hardness test to read lower afterwards, because it will not
  • Hardness is very high, where the scale control benefit narrows

Common questions

Will my hardness test read lower after fitting one?

No, and this is the single most important thing to understand about these units. The calcium and magnesium are still dissolved in the water at exactly the same concentration. The media changes how those minerals behave so they are less likely to form scale on a surface, but nothing is removed. Any seller telling you a test will read lower is describing a softener, not a conditioner.

Why is it sometimes called a salt-free softener?

Because it sells better, not because it is accurate. Softening has a specific meaning, which is removing hardness minerals, and it is the basis of the NSF/ANSI 44 standard. These units do not do that. We call them conditioners because the distinction changes what you should expect to notice in your kitchen and your laundry.

So when is one actually the right choice?

When you want less scale in a water heater and a softener is not possible. No drain within reach, no outlet, or a local restriction on discharging brine to the sewer. Under those constraints a conditioner delivers the scale benefit and needs neither salt nor a drain. If none of those constraints apply and you want water that feels soft, buy a softener.
