Why certification matters more here than anywhere else
PFAS compounds give no taste, no smell, and no colour. You cannot tell whether a filter is working, and you cannot tell when it has stopped. That removes every informal check people normally rely on, and it puts all the weight on certification and on the replacement schedule.
Three routes are certified. Activated carbon systems tested under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS reduction. Systems tested under the NSF/ANSI P473 protocol, written specifically for those two compounds. Reverse osmosis systems certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for PFAS reduction.
A general purpose carbon filter with no PFAS certification should not be assumed to help. Some reduce these compounds to a degree and some barely do, and without testing there is no way to know which you have bought.
What the certifications cover, and what they leave out
PFAS is a family of thousands of manufactured compounds. Certifications are written around named ones, most often PFOA and PFOS, because those are the ones with established test methods and regulatory limits.
A system certified for PFOA and PFOS reduction has been validated against those. It has not been validated against every related compound, and a claim that a product removes PFAS without qualification overstates what any certification supports.
This is a limit of the testing framework rather than a criticism of the products. It is worth knowing so that expectations match what was actually verified.
Breakthrough, and why the calendar governs
Carbon media has a finite capacity. Once it is reached, PFAS passes through at close to the inlet concentration. This is called breakthrough, and because there is no taste or smell, it is invisible.
That is why the manufacturer's rated capacity is the binding constraint, not how the water tastes and not how the filter looks. We set the replacement date at handover based on rated capacity and your household's usage, and we would rather change a cartridge early than late.
If your utility reports non-detect for the regulated compounds and you are not on a private well near a known source, the honest position is that this equipment is not indicated. It has a real running cost and it should be installed against a confirmed result.
What it reduces, and under which standard
Each row names the NSF/ANSI standard the category is tested under. A standard describes what the test covers. It does not mean every unit on the market carries that certification, so check the specific model against its listing before you buy.

What it does not do
Every filter has a boundary. These are the things this one will not fix, listed so you can rule it out quickly if your problem is on the list.
- The full PFAS family. Certifications cover named compounds, most often PFOA and PFOS, not thousands of related substances.
- PFAS at every tap, if the system is point-of-use.
- Anything at all once the media is exhausted, and PFAS breakthrough gives no taste or smell warning.
When it fits
- Your utility report or a state notice shows PFAS above the applicable limit
- You are on a private well within a known PFAS plume
- You want drinking and cooking water treated specifically for these compounds
When it does not fit
- No testing has confirmed PFAS is present
- You expect a general purpose carbon filter to cover it, which it does not unless certified
- You need whole-building treatment, where cost rises steeply
Space, services, and upkeep
Under-sink, similar to a carbon or RO installation.
No drain connection is required. It needs no power. In the right configuration this can work in a rental, because it does not have to permanently alter the property.
Replacement interval. Strictly by the manufacturer's rated capacity, not by taste. Typically every 6 to 12 months for carbon, 2 to 5 years for RO membranes.

Common questions
How do I know if I have PFAS?
On public water, check your utility's annual report and any state notices, because public systems are now required to monitor and report the regulated compounds. On a private well the only way to know is a laboratory test using an approved method. PFAS sampling has strict handling rules, because these compounds are present in many everyday materials that can contaminate the sample, so follow the laboratory's instructions exactly.
Does a regular carbon filter remove PFAS?
Do not assume so. Some activated carbon filters reduce PFOA and PFOS to a useful degree and others barely do, and without certification there is no way to tell which you have. Look specifically for certification under NSF/ANSI 53 or the P473 protocol for those compounds, or NSF/ANSI 58 on a reverse osmosis system. A general taste and odour filter certified only to standard 42 should not be relied on.
How will I know when the filter stops working?
You will not, and that is why the replacement schedule matters more here than in any other category. PFAS has no taste, no smell, and no colour, so breakthrough gives no warning at all. Replace strictly on the manufacturer's rated capacity in gallons rather than on how the water seems, and err early rather than late.
