The difference a pump makes
A tankless system uses an internal booster pump to push water through the membrane on demand, rather than slowly filling a storage tank. The result is the same treated water with a very different footprint.
The storage tank is what makes a conventional system bulky. Remove it and the unit shrinks to something that fits beside a cabinet wall, or on a countertop in models designed for it.
The pump also raises pressure at the membrane, which improves rejection and reduces the volume sent to drain. That makes these systems generally more efficient than an unpumped tank model.
Why this is usually the renter's answer
Countertop tankless units need no plumbing modification at all. They fill from a reservoir or connect to the tap with a diverter, drain into the sink, and plug into a normal outlet. Nothing is drilled and nothing is permanent.
When the tenancy ends, the unit goes with you. That matters, because the alternative in a rental is either accepting the water as it is or spending money on equipment that belongs to the building.
Under-sink tankless models still tee into the supply and usually need a dedicated tap, so those remain a landlord conversation.
The trade-offs to know about
It needs power. During an outage there is no stored treated water and no production, where a tank system would still hold a few gallons.
The pump makes noise while producing. It is brief and most people stop noticing, but it is not silent and it is worth knowing before it is installed in a quiet kitchen.
