Source water: All groundwater. Every gallon comes from the aquifer system beneath Long Island, which the Environmental Protection Agency designated a Sole Source Aquifer in 1978 as one of the first in the country. That designation means there is no practical alternative supply: if the aquifer is contaminated, there is nowhere else to draw from. More than 1,500 public supply wells across Long Island pump over 400 million gallons a day for roughly three million people. Reported by United States Environmental Protection Agency for 2024.

There is no single Hempstead water utility. The town is supplied by dozens of separate water districts and incorporated village systems, each with its own wells, its own treatment and its own annual report.
