Source water: Queens is the only borough with a groundwater history of its own, and it is worth knowing that the history is closed. From 1887 to 1996 the private Jamaica Water Supply Company ran wells serving south eastern Queens and part of Nassau County. The city bought the Queens portion in 1996 and renamed it the groundwater supply system: 67 supply wells at 43 well stations, with storage. It supplied a limited part of the Queens distribution network until 2007 and has not been in service since. Every Queens tap today is on Catskill and Delaware surface water like the rest of the city, and the wells stand as a reserve rather than a supply.
