The Van de Water plant in the Town of Tonawanda takes river water and supplies northern Erie County, which is the side Amherst sits on, and it also sends water east to some Monroe County Water Authority customers through an interconnection at the Genesee County line. The authority's other plant, Sturgeon Point at Evans, draws on the lake and supplies the southern half of the county along with parts of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus. Between them they reach more than 550,000 people through 174,701 service connections. A river intake and a lake intake behave differently through the year: the Niagara responds within days to rainfall upstream, while a lake buffers the same weather over weeks, so seasonal swings in turbidity reach the northern side of the county faster.
