What is in the water in New Haven

New Haven is served by South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) .

Source water: Surface reservoirs, chiefly Lake Gaillard in North Branford and Lake Whitney on the Mill River. Lake Gaillard took seven years to build, from 1926 to 1933, and is over a mile and a half long by more than a mile wide, covering over 20 percent of the area of North Branford. Lake Whitney is older still: the utility was founded in 1849 as the New Haven Water Company, and one of its founders was Eli Whitney II, who began the dam that impounds the Mill River. The authority supplies around 45 to 55 million gallons a day to roughly 430,000 people across a fifteen town region, and protects more than 26,000 acres of watershed land to keep the raw water clean before treatment begins. It is a non-profit public corporation and a political subdivision of the state rather than an investor-owned utility, which is unusual for a system of this size in Connecticut and means surplus goes back into the system rather than to shareholders.

The interesting thing about the inventory here is the method. Rather than excavate at every address, the authority is digging at around 700 properties across four New Haven neighbourhoods, Fair Haven, Dixwell, Newhallville and Westville, marking pipe locations in blue paint beforehand. Findings from roughly 2,500 inspected properties are then fed into software that infers the likely material everywhere else. That is faster and very much cheaper than the alternative, and it is a reasonable way to meet a federal deadline that every water system in the country faced on the same day in October 2024. It does mean something specific for you as a resident: unless your own property was one of the ones dug, the entry against your address is a statistical prediction, not an observation. Treat it as a strong hint rather than a finding.
