Source water: Three separate water providers operate inside this one township, and which one bills you decides everything else on this page. The township's own utility department runs eight wells, three pumping from the Old Bridge sands and five from the Farrington sands, and serves about 33,402 people with the option of buying supplementary water from New Jersey American Water. New Jersey American Water also serves part of the township directly, from the Raritan Millstone and Canal Road plants, which is river derived surface water rather than groundwater. Find your supplier on your bill before reading any further, because deep well water and treated river water are not comparable and no township wide statement covers both. On the township utility's side the water is confined aquifer groundwater, mineral rich, consistent through the year and sealed away from anything happening on the surface today. The Old Bridge sands sit relatively shallow and the Farrington sands considerably deeper, and the five Farrington wells carry most of the load. That profile means hardness and iron are the realistic complaints rather than seasonal taste changes, and it means a test taken in one month is a reasonable guide to the next. On the New Jersey American Water side the picture reverses: chloramine as the residual disinfectant for most of the year, a ten week switch to free chlorine in late winter, and a hardness that moves with the river. Equipment correctly specified for one side of Monroe would be wrong on the other.
