What is in the water in Stamford

Stamford is served by Aquarion Water Company of Connecticut, Stamford system .

Source water: Five reservoirs supply about 99 per cent of an average demand near 16.9 million gallons a day, and three of the five are not in Connecticut. Laurel and North Stamford lie within the state; Mill, Trinity and Siscowit sit across the line in New York. The Southwest Regional Pipeline can bring in the Canal Street and Coleytown well fields at Westport and the Hemlocks Reservoir at Fairfield, and the Mianus supply at Greenwich is drawn on occasionally. A Connecticut city whose watershed is majority New York land is in an unusual position: the protection of its own drinking water depends on planning and land use decisions taken in another state's towns. Reported by Connecticut Department of Public Health for 2004.

Reservoir water is coagulated, filtered through sand and chlorinated at the final stage, with the chemistry adjusted to control the corrosion that would otherwise draw lead out of household plumbing. Between 7 April and November 2025 the company cleaned mains across the Stamford and Greenwich systems, warning customers of temporary low pressure, interruptions and discoloured water from minerals stirred loose inside the pipes. That distinction is the one most often got wrong. Discolouration during mains work is suspended sediment that has been sitting in the pipe for years, and a sediment cartridge deals with it for a few pounds. It is not evidence that the supply needs carbon or reverse osmosis, and in this part of Connecticut it is the single most common reason people buy equipment they did not need.

These figures describe the distribution system. Your own tap can differ, and for lead it very likely does.

We do not yet hold a sourced figure for every field on this page. Where something is missing it is left blank rather than estimated, because an unsourced number here would look like information.

Buildings and plumbing in Stamford

Aquarion launched an address level service line inventory in October 2024 across its Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire systems under the federal Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, recording the material on both the utility owned and the customer owned side, and wrote to every customer whose line is recorded as lead, galvanised or unknown. The company states there is no lead in the water leaving its treatment plants and none in its mains. That is a more useful statement than it first appears, because it removes two of the three places lead could come from and leaves the service line and the plumbing inside the building. Anything measured at a Stamford kitchen tap therefore belongs to the property, not to the supply, and is fixed at the property.

PFAS in Stamford

Aquarion carries out voluntary PFAS testing across each of its water systems and publishes system-level results. The federal PFAS drinking water limits finalised in 2024 require monitoring and, where levels exceed the limits, treatment. Check the system-specific result for Stamford before deciding whether treatment is warranted at your tap.

What this means in practice

  • Chlorine and chloramine taste. Confirm with free and total chlorine test strip, plus the utility report for the disinfectant type.
  • Lead in drinking water. Confirm with certified laboratory analysis of a first-draw tap sample.
  • PFAS. Confirm with certified laboratory analysis using an epa-approved pfas method.

What these figures mean for filter choice

Lead is a plumbing question rather than a supply question in Stamford, as it is everywhere. What that means practically is that a filter certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead at the tap you drink from sits downstream of the entire problem, whereas a whole-house filter at the point of entry sits upstream of nearly all of it and costs several times more.

Filters that apply here

  • Lead reduction filters. Point-of-use filters certified for lead under NSF/ANSI 53.
  • PFAS reduction systems. Reverse osmosis or a certified activated carbon system aimed at per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
  • Under-sink carbon filters. A carbon block cartridge on the cold line under the sink.
  • Reverse osmosis, tank. A membrane system under the sink that produces treated water to a dedicated tap and stores it in a small pressure tank.
  • Whole-house filtration. A filter plumbed into the main line where water enters the building, so every tap, shower, and appliance downstream is fed treated water.
