The system takes about 54 per cent as purchased supply from a long list of neighbours, including Orange, Verona, the Southeast Morris County authority, the Passaic Valley Water Commission through the Morris County connection, Newark, Montclair, Madison, Livingston, Chatham and the company's own Raritan system. Another 25 per cent is groundwater from 25 wells and 21 per cent is surface water from four intakes. The underlying sources behind those shares are the Passaic River, Canoe Brook, the Brunswick aquifer, glacial sand and gravel, and igneous and metamorphic rock. A system assembled from ten purchase agreements, 25 wells and four intakes does not have a water chemistry so much as a daily average of several. The company's own treatment happens at the Canoe Brook plant, where the state sets the water quality parameters monitored on a fortnightly basis. Two disclosures in the system's published record are worth knowing rather than glossing. In September 2016 it incurred a monitoring violation because required source water samples were taken later than the state's deadline, and it returned to compliance the following month. There is also a separate public notice concerning a failure to meet a treatment requirement at the Short Hills wells field. Both were disclosed and both were resolved, which is the process working; they are a reason to read the current report rather than assume every year looks alike.

Buildings and plumbing in Irvington
